Giddings: Shipp can play but I don't think he's ready to step up and be the guy for UCLA. IIRC from watching the choppy web stream last night he shot that air ball late that was bailed out with a loose ball foul.

UCLA lost Mbah a Moute, Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook to the NBA. They are going to have some growing pains. Those three combined for 41 of 69 points and 31 of 47 rebounds in last years game. By the #s in last years game Michigan played awful -- they shot 6 of 31 from long range and got outrebounded 47-29.

In terms of their freshman, the "Fab Five" combined for 10 points and 5 rebounds against Miami Ohio. Clearly another week of practice, especially after a near loss, for a young team will be very beneficial. This UCLA team will most likely look nothing like the team on the court in March but the RPI can't tell so this is a good chance for U-M.

Don't forget about Josh Shipp. Seems like that guy has been at UCLA for 10 years, but he's right up there with Collison as UCLA's best player.

It will be interesting to see Beilein's game plan. Miami seemed to have a lot of success by slowing down the game, but my bet is that Coach B wants to use the 1-3-1 as much as possible to force UCLA's "Fab Five" frosh to turn the ball over.

Side note: Anybody else going to the game in NYC? I'll be there with the "FRESH" sign...

FWIW, Miami seems to have mastered the art of slowing games down against big name schools and keeping it close. Here are some scores from last year:
Xavier 59-57 W, USC 53-57 L, Dayton 62-63 L, Louisville 44-47 L, Illinois 61-58 W, Kansas 54-78 L.

They were knocked out of the MAC tourney by Kent St 47-49 before going to the CBI and losing to Tulsa.

So I wouldn't take too much out of this game against UCLA, that being said UCLA is definitely young and this is the best time to play them IMO.

Nice catch Steele. A start to the list: Hoops, Speakers, Scorers table scoreboard, redoing the court, some infrastructure stuff in Crisler (hot water in bathrooms, fixing leaks, etc).

I can't wait for this game! Mich has a great chance to start the season with a big upset.

By the way- did anyone read #44 on that SI Hoops Ideology Report? Michigan was 20th in the nation in the amount they spent on their basketball program last year ($5.3 mill)? I know there were some minor upgrades to Crisler and Beilein is well-paid, but that seems really high to me. Did I miss something?

With 00:54 left in the game, Miami (Oh) was winning. With 00:21 left in the UCLA vs. Miami (Oh) game, the score was knotted at 59.

One stat the stuck out to me in UCLA vs. Miami game, was that as a a team UCLA only had 5 assists.

Like Dylan has said, I think Michigan will have a real shot at a win this early in the season against UCLA. Lets hope they get some good film and practice time in before next Thursday.

Yup, I turned the end of it on the internet stream. Miami looked to be playing great. Michael Bramos is a Michigan guy too. Hopefully it doesn't serve as a wake up call for UCLA. But they are really young beyond Collison is I'm not mistaken so getting them in the third game of the year might be a good thing.
