Pre-Weekend Notes and Best Guess 2009 Recruiting Class

  • First this weekends originally planned visits:
  • No Andy Brown this week. Is it because Beilein is out of town or a guy like Benzing is taking his spot?
  • No Darius Morris, this visit had been rescheduled for a while I think.
  • Brian Elerbee is now doing construction according to The Realests.
  • A couple things on Robin Benzing:
  • I confirmed with Chris at European Prospects that the eligiblity situation is that he would enter college this year and most likely have to sit out the 08-09 season before being able to play the next year. Sorry, from looking at previous cases it appears that Benzing would have SOPHOMORE eligibility  in 09-10 instead of RS-Freshman eligibility.
  • In regards to Benzing’s position a lot of scouting services have him listed as a 3 man. I think that down the road in the NBA Benzing certainly could project to a 3 man but right now with the roster composition in Beilein’s offense I can’t see Benzing playing anything but the 4.
  • Thanks to Sheryl for pointing out that Zack and Stu are playing in another All-Star game, this time on opposite teams. This time it’s the Hoosiers’ Reunion All Star Classic on June 6th (8pm).

Best Bets 2009

I am going to make a best guess list for the 2009 recruiting class which right now has 4 (3 open) spots. This is basically just a preview of the updates I am planning for the hot board brought to you early. For the record this is my personal opinion and is not affiliated in any way with the University of Michigan basketball program.

1. Jordan Morgan - Center/PF - Commit
Morgan provides the size and post presence that Michigan needs inside but also still has a little bit of range on his jumper.

2. Robin Benzing - PF/SF
I think Benzing will come to Michigan and fill the opening at the PF. He would enroll this summer but most likely have to red shirt due to NCAA rules. This would give him a year to get acclimated to the US and also start learning Beilein’s system. It might be a stretch but I think Benzing might have jumped ahead of Andy Brown given that Beilein has already traveled over to Germany to see Benzing play.
Back-Up: Andy Brown

3. Darius Morris - PG
The need at point guard is huge, Morris provides a very good combo of passing, flair, scoring and athleticism that Michigan needs in the back court.
Back-Ups: Nick Russell, CJ Harris or Carl Jones

4. Best Available - C/WF/SG
The last scholarship is the toughest to project, it would seem like it should goto a wing or a big man but I think Michigan will just go for the best available player. There are not many big men on the radar right now that appear to be sure bets. I think the best bets here are one of the following: Nick Russell, Andy Brown, Manny Atkins or CJ Harris. I think that some sort of late riser could also fill this spot, I wouldn’t be suprised to see this spot stay around for a while especially if Michigan can lock up a point guard and 4-man.

More on Benzing

A few more stats on Benzing from this past year. With the ProA team Benzing averaged 8ppg in 18.1mpg while shooting 50% (25.7% 3pt) from the field. In the U19 league Robin averaged 22.5 ppg in 26.3 minutes while shooting 62.1% (37.3% 3pt) from the field. For comparisons sake Mark Kelley (who graduated from UC Irvine and averaged 9 and 5 his senior year) averaged 17.1 ppg and 7.6 rebounds in the ProA league. It’s still important to remember that Benzing is probably substantially younger than a lot of the kids playing in the ProA league because its a professional league and not an age limit league like the U19.

Practice Facility By 2010

Quick hitter on the practice facility. According to Eric Lacy the official word is that Michigan wants a $20 million dollar practice facility by 2010 and architects continue to meet with school officials. Fund raising is still an issue but it looks like there is a (planned) date in place. Here is a link to Lacy’s blog that he just posted pertaining to the practice facility.

Introducing Robin Benzing

Robin BenzingRobin Benzing appears to be the kid Beilein has been checking out across the pond over in Germany. This article (German) links Michigan and Benzing. Heres the school list (translated):

In late Benzing will pack the suitcase and the United States, either to San Diego or Michigan.

EuropeanProspects.com has the scoop on Benzing:

Robin BenzingBut the risk of being suspended for one season does not stop Benzing’s dream to play in the NCAA. In a recent article in the German press, he states that he will do extra session in the weightlifting room while the other guys are practicing. He has even rejected a professional offer by the German team of Frankfurt Skyliners in order to go to the States. And after some rumors sending him to Fresno States, there are currently only two teams left on the list that he may join: San Diego or Michigan. Michigan coach John Beilein even went to Germany and visited Benzing recently in order to explain him the advantages of moving to Ann Arbor.

But first of all, Robin will have to get his High School degree and play the Final Four of the U19 League with Langen on the 31st May and 1st June. I will be present for the two days of the tournament and give of course a detailed scouting report about his progress

Benzing seems to be the type of player Beilein loves. He is definetely long and seems like a perfect fit for the 4 position in Beilein’s offense. This page names him the best newcomer in the Bundesliga 2 for 08/09. I hvae no clue as to the level of competition in the Bundesliga 2. In 2006 at the adidas Super Star Camp Euro Robin was named to the All-Star team and the best defense. I exchanged a few emails with Christophe Ney from European Prospects and he has seen Benzing play a couple times and had this to say:

  • 6 foot 10
  • Very good shooter
  • Lacking physical strength
  • Very good ball handler for a 6-10 man

NBA Draft.Net had this to say on Robin (over a year old) - 06/07 stats:

Robin BenzingRight now Robin is too skinny but reminds some of Dirk Nowitzki at the same age, but a better defensive player. He lacks Dirk’s frame however, with thin shoulders. He takes pride in good defense and taking charges. Besides that, he has quite good ball handling and can shoot threes pretty well. Competes hard, strong motor. The top talent in the 89 class in Germany by far. Has a long ways to go, but decent talent and size.

Another profile, this one from DraftExpress on Benzing (also over a year old):

Robin BenzingPerhaps the most freakish combination of size relative to his position, Benzing plays like a real wing despite standing around 6-10. However, he’s a very raw player, particularly in terms of his physical profile. He’s a long and skinny kid who shows a pretty average frame, enough for a perimeter player but rather underwhelming if we envision a possible future at the power forward position. His lack of strength limited his effectiveness on court, not allowing him to operate comfortably on both ends of the court.

Anyway, it’s pretty remarkable to see a 6-10 guy like Benzing putting the ball on the floor as easily as he does. He’s not the quickest guy around, but he can attack the basket going both ways and shows nice footwork. Still, he struggles finishing his slashing attempts, lacking some ability to score around the basket in traffic, but also some aggressiveness to attack the rim. He can pass the ball off the drive with mixed results: his intentions seem pretty interesting, but he’s not that precise with his passes. In the shooting department he looks quite inconsistent. He enjoys range out to the three point line, but his mechanics probably need to be polished. Benzing barely uses his size to post-up his opponents, emerging as virtually a pure face-up player at this point. Perhaps when he gains some strength he will try harder to cash in off his size. Defensively, he enjoys the lateral quickness of a small forward, although again he sometimes gets outmuscled.

There are some issues with the Benzing situation though. The first problem is eligibility, there have been numerous NCAA issues with European players coming over and playing college ball. So it’s a pretty safe bet that Benzing will have to deal with a lot of paper work and issues early on. I think Benzing is graduating high school this spring (making him a 2008 recruit) but would most likely sit a year which basically turns him into an 09. If he has to sit out a year it probably wouldn’t be that bad of a thing because he certainly needs to put on muscle as is evident in his pictures. If the issues can be worked out I think taking a chance on a guy like this would be a great move. One of Beilein’s best players at West Virginia was German Johannes Herber. Robin just strikes me as one of those super skilled big men that would just make Beilein drool and I think the situation is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Star Gazing

Rivals updated their 2009 Top 150 for all of you ranking-obsessed recruitniks out there. Here are some of the more relevant an interesting moves from a Michigan point of view.

  • Darius Morris - #64 - UP - Encouraging to say the least, the kid is a very solid player and appears to be option 1a for a 2009 PG. Just need to get him on campus and try to seal the deal.
  • DaShonte Riley - #111 - DOWN - Riley has been less than stellar for a while now and has gone from a top 25 5-star to a 3-star out of the top 100. Riley’s poor play hadn’t really been a secret so this is not really a big suprise.
  • Carl Jones - #117 - UP - Carl enters to the top 150 and continues to be a PG on Michigan’s board. He is just so very small.
  • Steven Pledger - #92 - UP - Pledger moves up after a very strong start to his AAU season. Haven’t heard much in regards to Pledger and Michigan lately.
  • Nick Russell - #88 - Another guard target to watch who is in the top 100.
  • No Andy Brown, MSU commit Nix is at 108, in-state bigs Still and Kirk hold onto top 150 status, Nik Garcia at #103

Rankings are clearly an inaccurate science and they change dramatically over the course of the summer so don’t be surprised if they look entirely different come August and September. But hey they give us something to talk about at least on the internet. Personally it’s always good to see kids you are recruiting have their stock go up but I am not particularly worried that Andy Brown is still unranked just like I don’t change my opinion of Morris because he jumped up a few spots.

Michigan Hosting Coaches vs Cancer Tournament

Michigan will be playing in the Coaches vs Cancer preseason tournament this year according to Fox Sports. This will provide 2 “easy” home games (Kentucky was upset by Gardener Webb last year in the CvC) and then a trip to Madison Square Garden where we would likely face Duke, UCLA, or Pitt/Rutgers:

Giles also said that the Duke, UCLA and Michigan are set as three of the four hosts for the Coaches vs. Cancer. The other host will likely be either Pittsburgh or Rutgers.

Interesting considering Duke and UCLA are already on the schedule for next year. I think the first rounds of the Coaches vs Cancer are usually the first week of November or so and then followed by a trip to New York City the next weekend. Two updates today, make sure you didn’t miss LLP winning his appeal.

Laval Lucas-Perry Wins Back Eligibility

Big news from Eric Lacy, Laval Lucas-Perry (transfer from Arizona) will receive eligibility back next year. He will still sit until December but will get his lost time back for a mid season transfer. This is big and essentially makes Lucas-Perry an 08 recruit who just can’t play the first half of next season. Props to Lacy for the heads up and being all over this and the Ekpe situation. Here are quotes from Laval’s father:

“I don’t know what they did or considered,” said Laval Perry of the NCAA’s decision. “All I know is that the result was in our favor. “We’re very happy about it, (Michigan’s) compliance office really helped.” Lucas-Perry, a 6-foot, 3-inch guard from Grand Blanc, Mich., left Arizona last December after completion of his first semester and won’t be able to play for Michigan until about mid-December. “We’re thinking his first game might be when Michigan plays Oakland at The Palace (of Auburn Hills),” Laval Perry said.

Updated Scholarship Breakdown. Here is some high school footage of Laval made when he committed to Arizona. I will go out on a limb and say that LLP will be our starting point guard December 20th:

One Step Forward Two Steps Back

Over recent history Michigan basketball has been so close to getting over the hump time and time again until something sets the program back again. Whether it is decommits from Joe Crawford and Al Horford, the injuries and suspensions following the NIT Championship, losing at home to Indiana and to Minnesota in the Big Ten Tournament after a huge win over Illinois to fall short of the NCAAs, or Courtney and Dion’s collapse against Ohio State. It’s hard to deny that Michigan has been close more than once. You have to wonder when we can just catch a break.

Last season was undeniably awful but this coming year on paper looked like it would be a huge improvement over last year’s debacle. Losing Ekpe puts a considerable dent in next year’s chances of major improvement that I think many people take for granted. Sure Ekpe only averaged 6 points and 5 rebounds (although 6ppg was good for 3rd on the team) but his contribution to this team was anchoring the defense. Michigan struggled mightily defensively all year. Michigan opponents shot 44.8% from the field (3rd worst in the Big Ten) while giving up 67.6 points per game (also 3rd worst in the Big Ten). Ekpe was Big Ten all-defense and led the Big Ten in blocks and should have contended for the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in my opinion. Taking Ekpe off of an already poor defensive team without adding anyone who is considered an above average defender or even athlete. This is definitely the patented Michigan basketball step back.
